Mykim Dang + Videolab Creative Shop Studio
She lives and loves to make things and has made a name for herself as a creative storyteller with a mastery of all mediums from film, video and sound to traditional 2D media. For Mykim, living out her mantra "creation over consumption" means wearing many hats. By day, she's the Video Editor at the Videolab Creative Shop Studio at Facebook and Instagram. She's also the designer and co-founder of Dichotomy Skateboards, where she designs jawdropping boards that can be hanging on your wall as art one day, and grinding down a rail the next.
Why do you do what you do?
I believe in the power and purpose of storytelling. It's a means of survival and it's my purpose in this world to make things that help other people feel and inspire them to create themselves.
What is the best compliment you've ever received?
I've been told that through my work and how I express myself, I inspire others to constantly push further and surprise themselves.
Where do you thrive?
In the ocean or with a camera in my hand.
What's one bad habit you can't seem to shake?
Playing Tomb Raider to relax.
What's the best idea you've heard recently?
Male contraception - fun fact, a University start up in India is pioneering the technology but because most of the big traditional Pharma companies are run by an old guard establishment, it's not being widely adopted or deemed marketable in the US.
What's the biggest lesson you learned this past year?
This year is about focus and having focus means setting boundaries and saying no to a lot of things in order to hone in on that thing that is most important to you. Whatever it is, whether it be your family, relationship, work, what have you, you need to realize that in every decision you make, you are also leaving something behind or off the table and that's OK.
